The American Astronomical Society Journals, which include the Astrophysical Journal, the Astronomical Journal, the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, and the Astrophysical Journal Letters) has recently launched a series of interviews with their Scientific Editors. The goal of the interviews is to introduce the astronomical community to the background and expertise of the individual editors, while at the same time helping to demystify the publishing process by giving authors and referees an insider’s view of what happens after a scientific paper is submitted. To keep the interviews fresh and candid, the format is conversational, single-take, and unedited. As part of the AAS Journals Scientific Editor Series, SDSU astronomy professor and Scientific Editor Allen Shafter shares his background and offers his insights into the peer review process.
